Escapades : Bandung 1

Hi everyone!

How's the first day of the week so far? Me? I'm still battling the bout of flu I've been suffering from since last Thursday, at the end of a very, very hectic week I had. Still sniffling here and there although my fever has slightly gone down. I haven't allowed the flu to take control over me. I have been fighting it by keeping myself busy with work and events.

Anyways, I met up with my parents yesterday evening for tea, and my dad told me that he is going off to a working trip to Jakarta and Bandung, before going to Yogyakarta for Ibu Kartika's birthday celebration. My mother will be joining him in Yogyakarta before the two of them will be going to Bali. I was so happy when I heard that they planned this trip! They really deserve a little break from their children. Hehe.

I'm sure everyone knows about my love for Jogja. Just search my blog for the many posts I've written about the beautiful city I've fallen in love with. (Keywords : Yogyakarta)

But, I was also super excited that my dad will be going to Bandung too. I was immediately reminded of my road trip to Bandung earlier this year after I was invited and brought to Jakarta by Dian Pelangi to attend the Sisterhood 2014 event (read my short post about that here) and I just had to recommend to my dad that he go to Dusun Bambu. I can't believe I haven't really blogged about my Jakarta-Bandung trip yet (er....or my Singapore trip.. or finish my Krabi posts... I'll get there guys!). Something happened at the end of the Jakarta trip and that's another story that I may share later. But, at least I'm starting to share now, right?

I'm going to rest early tonight and I'm pumped up to share about the beautiful places in Jakarta and Bandung which I visited and why this Dusun Bambu is such a must-visit in Bandung! But tonight, I'm just going to post some teaser pictures of the place and some fun pictures of me, Shea Rasol, Nurul Hidayati and our gracious hosts Dian Pelangi and Lulue Elhasbu.

I had so much fun and I have so much to share about the trip!

Goodnight everyone.

It's been a while since I've written and shared about my daughter, the late Putri Jibrael Zumirrah in the Expect the Unexpected series on my blog. I've been trying my best to keep myself busy and I haven't written about her absence since she left this world. It's been one year and ten months but I am still missing her so much and still struggling to deal with her absence. Now, I've been wanting to post about this for the longest time but certain things have triggered me to write this tonight. A dear friend's blogpost, and, believe it or not, after watching the Big Hero 6 movie.

I watched Big Hero 6 last night and there were so many things that I could relate to: The movie shows how losses affect people and how people deal with them differently. The good, the bad, and the ugly.

**BIG HERO 6 MOVIE SPOILER ALERT**

When the little kid Hiro lost his big brother after losing his parents, he was so broken. When he had the chance to seek revenge against the brother's killer, he suddenly found his purpose again. But he did not realise that it was his anger which drove him. He only managed to snap out of it when he realized that it wasn't what his brother would have wanted.

On the other hand, the villain let his anger consume him.  He totally lost his way to seek revenge over his daughter's death. Hiro could have been that person too. He was lucky that his brother's love came through for him. In a way, I can relate. There are times when I just want to get angry with the world and everything, but I am thankful that I can turn to God when these feelings threaten to engulf me. I am thankful.

Don't get me wrong, Big Hero 6 was a good, enjoyable movie. It's heavily recommended. It made me laugh a lot, but it also dealt with a lot of issues which just struck a chord with me. It also made a lot of people cry too.

The other thing that I could relate to was that Baymax's prescription to help Hiro deal with his loss was quite accurate: having the support from family and friends, warm hugs, and non-judgmental and inoffensive words of comfort.

Alhamdulillah, I've had the warm support of lots of people last year when she first left this world: family and friends and I'm very thankful for that. But now, at a time when so many people have moved on with their lives, I'm still dealing with the hole in my heart, although I try my best not to show it. I still have to deal with the surge of grief that I have to deal with on my own. It's not that the support system is gone, but I do understand that people have their own lives, their own bigger problems. Everyone is busy with their own struggles and battles in life. Sometimes I feel like I do not want to impose my feelings on them.

I think I've turned from an extrovert into an introvert after my experience (read here: PPRoM).

So, I would rather contain my deepest feelings and just remain quiet or talk about other things that other people can easily relate to. Things that won't make people suddenly look sad, awkward or uncomfortable. I do realise it now that certain things will make people want to change topics because they wouldn't know what to say if I bring up Jibrael's name in my conversations. I feel lonely at times when I have to limit what I can talk about with people, but I do know that it is during these times that I have to turn to the Creator. He turns these people away from me so that I have no one else to turn to but Him.

One of the many things that I've learned is that dealing with grief is not linear. This is the most relatable advice any grieving person should realise as soon as possible so that they can understand their situation and not feel guilty that they have not managed to hide the feelings away. Society sort of expects that these feelings go away on their own after 6 months. But truth is, it doesn't. It won't. I can have two weeks of normal days where the grief doesn't affect me so much, but the next day, the grief overwhelms me again, so much so that I can't focus on anything else. They call it grief attacks. I blank out. I become numb, sad or angry at everyone or no one for no apparent reason, I become quiet. I become distant. I become socially awkward. I can't control it, and all it does is drive people away from me. But it's something I have come to accept and live with. The price for fighting for my daughter's life all the way with everything I had. and still losing her.

I accept it. And I will do it all over again for her without hesitation. I have no regrets because she has taught me so much and has made me a mother. I just miss her so much.

I do know that I am improving, especially from early last year where I would suddenly cry or panic if I hear sudden loud noises, when I couldn't even go out of my room without people forcing me to. When I couldn't bear to face some babies (some babies are okay, some aren't, especially girls, but I have no idea why and I can't control it). In that sense, I have improved over the past year. However, there are still triggers which affect me. Most of these triggers are unintentional, and I know that generally people mean well. But honestly they don't know the effects it has on those suffering from grief.

Grieving isn't a disease, illness or something you can just "get over". It is a life-long process. It's perfectly okay to not be okay and don't let anyone try and rush your journey of healing. Accepting this will also take time. People will try to convince themselves that  they should quickly get over the loss and become "normal" again. The wound will never fully heal, it is not meant to. You have lost a piece of yourself which is no longer here on this world, but waiting for you in the hereafter. This is what I feel right now, as I'm writing this. This is a comfort for me. Of course, I still do have momentarily breakdowns so I'm writing this to remind myself because there are a lot of times when the trigger happens and I cannot control myself.

I write this in the sincere hopes of sharing my experience with those who have suffered loss and to those who want to help someone who they know have suffered loss.  May this post be read in such light and may it be beneficial for everyone, and myself. May God  grant us strength and guide us through this journey of healing and acceptance of the things that we can change and the things that we can't.

Surprise Fashion Feature

Good evening, folks.

It wasn't particularly a good day for me yesterday after my body forced me to take a little rest, although I must admit I felt a little relief after pouring out my heart in yesterday's blogpost. This morning though, I received a delightful surprise that really made my day and had me buzzing after finding out that aere was featured in the papers again!

Special thanks and mention goes out to my dear @kinayasnain who alerted me to the happy news when she tagged me in a picture of the Berita Harian article this morning. I went to get two copies at lunch time and naturally took a picture of the article and shared it on my IG straightaway. The write-up was regarding the KL Fashion Weekend event last week. I just didn't know how to contain my excitement to see all 7 pieces featured in the newspaper. Seven!!! I seriously felt like doing a little dance, but I guess my squeals were just as annoying to those who were around me.

The article was written on the KL Fashion Weekend as a whole and was highlighting new and fresh designs, It wasn't about aere in particular. In fact there was no mention on aere at all. But that made me even more happier because I think the writer might have chosen the pictures of all seven of aere's designs which she thought represented the contents of her article. That makes me feel really happy and just beaming with pride. Seriously I am just over the moon right now. :)

First, I did not even think that I would be showcasing aere on a runway so soon. Secondly, I'm still digesting the fact that our designs were chosen to be featured in the newspapers at our very first fashion show! It's just that recognition, however small it may seem to others, that makes it a huge achievement for me. So, thank you for choosing aere's pieces to be featured in your writeup, Ms Writer Fatin Hafizah.

Actually this is the second time aere has been featured in Berita Harian in this past 1 month. The first time was when Rico Rinaldi wrote in his column just a month ago about the culture of #ootd in his article and interviewedVivy Yusof and myself. He chose to feature two of my aere #ootd shots among others.

The looks were taken from my blog posts :

This follows the first feature on aere in the Sun Daily which I shared here in The Sun was Shining on Me Today post.

I am so happy at the positive response in the media, and most importantly, the indescribable support from all of you on the first release of my first collection on the 28th October 2014. The response was so overwhelming that some designs were sold out already within days and now most of the designs are almost close to selling out just within the first two weeks of our first release online. Honestly, this is driving me even more to work harder and better for the next collections! Thanks so much for all the support which I really, really  appreciate. You have no idea what it means to me :)  Alhamdulillah.

And yes, I know I promised you guys in my post One Small Step: First Fashion Show that I will be sharing my thoughts on my first fashion show experience! So, wait up k. Just to keep you updated I have been a little busy working on releasing a few new designs for aere next week, so be sure to stay tuned to aere's IG or just click on aere so that you won't miss out :)

Good night everyone.

Scintillating Black Leanira

I don't know why but I love butterflies for all its beauty and imperfections. They are just beautiful creatures of God. In fact, this blog started off way back in 2009 with the name The Scintillating Butterflies before it was changed to rnadia.com at the end of last year.

If you were wondering where I got the names of my aere pieces ZERENE, SATYR and ZEPHYR from the aere's first collection, yes it's actually the name of butterflies. I thought it was a good way to integrate my love of butterflies into my label. I decided to name all of the pieces from aere's first collection with the names of butterflies.

This Tuesday, insyaAllah aere will be releasing two new designs from the first collection. Here in this post I am sharing one of the designs, LEANIRA. It's a floor length shirt dress fully embellished with aere's customised gold buttons all the way down which was designed so that it could be worn in many ways. You can either wear it as a fully buttoned down dress; a cool, open trench coat-ish jacket; or partially buttoned for that windy-when-you-walk effect. The LEANIRA is fully lined and not sheer but just light enough to be worn as a jacket.

I decided to wear it with my white pants today and paired it with the galaxy scarf from Yadotsa a few years ago. I only partially buttoned the LEANIRA down, so that it has a bit of a dramatic and flowy effect when I walk. It's a kind of a different look from what I would normally wear on a casual Sunday, but it has a slight European feel to it.

This shoot was done on a rooftop and the husband managed to capture some nice shots as it was really windy up there. Just for good measure, I also buttoned up all the way down to share how it would look if you prefer a more structured look. The LEANIRA is floor length, but don't fret. If the dress is too long, I made sure that the buttons don't get in the way of the alteration.

Anyways, do keep a look at aere's page to see what we have got in store for you this Tuesday. Two days to go! Stay tuned to aere's IG for updates!

My First Fashion Show : Behind the Scenes

I’ve shared with you in my post One Small Stepthat aere had our fashion show on the 12th of November 2014. When Fashion Valet invited aere to join the fashion show for their slot at the KL Fashion Weekend 2014 I was so nervous but excited!

They informed me less than a week before the show. I've been to my share of fashion shows (see some which I blogged about : When Our Eyes Met, Mimpikita : Fashion Lovers Unite,  Fashion Showcase of Alia Bastamam & Pu3Pu3 & Yadotsa The Show and the Beautiful People) but I've never really been involved behind the scenes. So many thoughts were immediately flooding in my head: am I ready? What looks or outfits am I going to showcase? How do I style it? I know that it was a once in a lifetime opportunity and aere was just launched less than 2 weeks at that time so despite my doubts and fears, I grabbed the opportunity and agreed to be in.

Never would I ever imagine to actually have a fashion show so soon! My first ever! I can’t be more grateful for the opportunity. They also informed me that aere will be collaborating with the remarkable dUCkscarves. Which makes it a double yay for me!

Thankfully they assured me that their stylist, Mazni was going to choose the items and style it their own way. But, of course I could get to comment on them. Phew. That was a relief because I'm still learning the ropes and also it was good to see how others would style aere. But the preparation for everything behind the scenes, it was just crazy… Choosing moods, songs, outfits, models, choreography, etc... I really learnt a lot and didn't imagine it to be so much work.

I was there at the fitting of the models the night before the show which was absolute chaos! There were 16 models in a room trying out clothes to be showcased the next day. I couldn’t imagine the chaos before but yes I went through it with the FV team. They were awesome! Had “fun” with Nadhira, Mazni and Veen Dee at the fitting. Athirah and Atika of dUCk were there too styling the scarves on the models wearing aere. Everything happened so fast! The models came in pap pap pap, I managed to snap some pictures to see how they look like in the aere outfits and then they were gone! In a split second! Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating there a little bit but really it was just a few minutes.

When they were gone, I was just there sitting down quietly and thinking “Wow, it happened just like that and it was just so fast!”. I realize that everything in the fashion industry moves really really fast at light speed.

To be honest, I was a bit nervous after the fitting because one of the models was really tall that it made the white ZERENE that she wore looked really short. When she wore aere’s jumpsuit pants together with the ZERENE sequined top, a big part of her belly was showing because the pants were too loose on her! It was a problem for me and we were thinking: what do we do? do we get them to wear an inner or how??? In the end, I decided to pair it with another design from the first collection which was yet to be released. Paired it with another set of pants and tadaa! She looked awesome in it!

Despite the chaotic preparation, I really loved being part of it. It was just a buzz and I really got to appreciate more of the faceless and nameless people behind the scenes who made everything work. These guys were awesome! The show would not have happened without them. Anyway, here I leave you with photos I managed to capture behind the scenes. I will blog about the show itself and also the people who were there.  The pictures of the models all dolled up and with spotlights on them! Hehe.

Below are some pictures I managed to capture before the runway was ready! Look at that blue thing, wait for my next post on the fashion show to see what it will be transformed into! Haha. Don't worry, we did not let the models walk on the blue 'carpet'.

Some candid shots of the models backstage before they walk down the runway.

Here are some photos I managed to quickly capture of the beautiful models wearing aere. They are all ready and set for the fashion show!

Jumpin Jumpsuits!

$

I just love wearing jumpsuits.

I used to wear them a lot in the days before there were OOTDs, so there's not many outfit shots of me wearing the jumpsuit here in my blog. But see my post Jumpin in Jakarta where I wrote about my love of jumpsuits and shared some ootd shots of me wearing a sleeveless jumpsuit earlier this year.

What's a jumpsuit?

A quick search on google defines jumpsuit as: "A garment incorporating trousers and a sleeved top in one piece worn as a fashion item, protective garment or uniform." It is also a one-piece suit worn by parachutists for jumping.

So that's a jumpsuit. I just love the idea behind it all.

There's just one issue with wearing a jumpsuit though. If I want to go to the washroom, sometimes it's a bit of a hassle to open up the whole suit from the top, especially if its at a dirty public toilet. Yeah. Ew.

I really wanted to design my own jumpsuit, but it had to be something practical and functional as well. So I decided to work on a jumpsuit that could be detachable, top and bottom. After brainstorming with my assistant designer Ina on how to make the jumpsuit more practical, she suggested to put a zipper around the waist. I was skeptical that it could work, it was really technical and it was a long and painstaking process to get it right. But we got there, and I am so proud of this piece :)

To be honest, I actually wanted to release the jumpsuit together with the first release on the 28th of October 2014. However, we had to work on the samples so many times with the supplier, to get the technical issues sorted out and until we were really, really, happy with the outcome. I also wanted to make sure that it is really easy to wear.

SO, this is the end result: aere's EDITH Detachable Jumpsuit which gives a minimalist and clean look. It is fully detachable at the waist-line so that the top and pants can be worn separately. So, it is like a 3-in-1 piece!

I had a blogging job to cover an event as a media earlier last month, so I wore the EDITH with the SATYR jacket for a workwear feel. Check out the full look at Unzipping the Surprise : aere. The EDITH jumpsuit is unassuming, but even on its own, I think its just perfect for those who like a clean aesthetic. I would probably wear the pants on its own with a sequinned top for a night out or wear the top with one of my skirts for a casual outing. I also made sure that it's not too body hugging, as some jumpsuits can be.

The jumpsuit was also showcased in aere's first fashion show as this design is a part of the first collection. You can see My First Fashion Show : Behind the Scenes to check out a glimpse of the jumpsuit backstage. I'll share more on the fashion show where the EDITH together with other aere pieces from the first collection was showcased on the runway by gorgeous models.

So listen up guys, EDITH is going to be released online tomorrow in three colours! Less than 12 hours time I tell you! Click aere to browse the other colours (it will also come in blue and black) and stay updated. The response to the previous release of the first collection was really overwhelming and more than half of the pieces are already sold out. At the moment there are no plans to restock the items because I plan to come up with new designs so hopefully you'll be able to get these before it finishes. I'm really hoping for a similar response this time around insyaAllah, I really think this is one of the best pieces for aere so far.

At the moment, I just had a two sauce beef lasagna at an awesome new cafe I just found while waiting for him to finish his meeting here. Super delicious !

Good night!

The Big One : My search for a bag has ended

Good morning everyone!

it was a really hectic day for me yesterday. I wasn't really able to sleep the night before, just trying to get everything ready for the launch of the two new designs. I really felt like I was going to just pass out of exhaustion the whole day, but once I reached home.. I just couldn't sleep. Sigh. I still couldn't sleep til about 2 am, wondering why I was wide awake.

Actually, I know why I was awake! Hehe.

After going through my favourite fashion blogs because I couldn't sleep earlier, I decided to  browse through shopbop for some online window shopping. Yup, biiiiiggg mistake. I just discovered that they are having a great sale with discounts up to 25% for ALL full price and sale items. Seriously.? Yes, seriously. Check out the link to the discount code here.

So I decided to take the plunge and finally buy the bag I've been putting off from buying for the past few months. Hehe. I don't have a lot of bags or spend too much on them, but I just had to get the bag I chose! In fact, it was sold out just before I put it in the cart and I actually had to wait for 30 minutes before I refreshed the browser. Just my luck managed to get one available piece so I straightaway put it on MY cart. It might sound funny but at that moment it was war!

I think I spent a few hours browsing through all of the designer bags without realising it. Everything is included in the sale so a lot of the items are snapping up fast. Even the stuffs I reserved on my cart were released after thirty minutes, and in the end, they were all snapped up by other people.

So I finally did it. I finally bought my bag.

This was the first time I bought anything from Shopbop and I liked their simple 3 page payment interface.

It's not the bag everyone is expecting. It's not the bags I shortlisted in my previous blogposts. It's neither blue or pink/nude but it was just something that screamed out to me that I must have. There was another bag that I really, really wanted and would've been just perfect for me. But the bag I really wanted does not ship outside the US. It was such a pity, I was so disappointed because I was all set to pay and then only read about the tiny notice that it doesn't ship here. Broke my heart :(

Anyway, these were my shortlist. Guess which bag I bought! Hehe!

The Moschino Mini Bag

Alexander Wang Diego Bucket Bag With Antiquated Gold Hardware

Anya Hindmarch Ebury Soft Mini Handbag

Phillip Lim 3.1 Pashli Small Stingray Satchel (Hint: This was the one they don't ship out of the US!)

Salvatore Ferragamo Miss Vara Mini Quilted Bag

Maison Martin Margiela Leather Mini ID Shoulder Bag

But guys, go check out the sale right now. I think a cool way would be to do a group purchase so that you can get better discounts. In fact, I might be back to scout for more bargain buys before the sale ends on the 1st of December 2014.

I'm going to be really tired from the lack of sleep these past few days, but I think the lack of sleep will be worth it. Just excited and can't wait to receive my bag!

Happy Wednesday peeps!

Happy Friday guys.

Yesterday I went for an entrepreneurial talk titled Journey to Harrods by Puan Sri Shariffa Nisa Bakri's  at Best Western Premier Dua. It's a sharing experience on how a local businesswoman had succeeded to get her own brand into a world renowned establishment, Harrods. When Min Jee told me about the talk, just two days before, I couldn't refuse. I am glad I went because I must say it was quite insightful.

She shared about how she started her business and how she managed to now have 50 stores worldwide. They also provided hi-tea (so that we could feel like we were in Harrods, they say) and it was a nice session of meeting new people and making new friends. The event was held by Peniagawati and it is the first session for the Entrepreneur Extraordinaire series.

Anyways, I managed to capture a few ootd shots just before the talk. Remember I blogged about the EDITH Detachable Jumpsuit in Jumpin Jumpsuit? So, yesterday I decided to mix and match the blue and black EDITH. I took the blue top and the black pants of my EDITH and turned it into a 2-colour jumpsuit. Since the jumpsuit by aere is detachable and can be separated into top and bottom, you can really get creative and create your own multicoloured jumpsuits. Get creative, guys!

Just to top off the look, I also brought a cropped jacket along with me.

Have you gotten yours? If you have, have fun mixing and matching your EDITH! I don't know, new colours maaaaaaaaay or may not be available soon. You get what I mean? Hehe. What colour would you like? Just curious to know. Anyway, DO share with me your looks by hash tagging #wearaere on IG. Or you can also send me an email (click "contact" tab).

Thanks Aina for taking taking these photos!!

Travelling Companions

Happy Sunday peeps!

I've been using this weekend to rest and recover after a quite hectic schedule these past two weeks.

This year has been a very blessed year. Travelling-wise, this has been a good year for me. I've travelled to Krabi, Jakarta, Bandung, Singapore and China. I've yet to blog about those trips since a lot of things have happened in my life. But I hope I'll get there.

God-willing, I'll be travelling at the end of January 2015 for a much needed trip. I don't think I'll share where, just yet, but I'm already preparing myself to go there.

Anyway, since shopbop is having a Go Big sale of up to 25% of all their items, and after I finally bought my first bag, I went there looking for travelling companions to take advantage of the sale.

Here's some of the items I found:

A cute 4-in-1 adapter by Flight 001. Just read the reviews: everyone loves this cool innovation and cute colour blocks. Hehe.

Rebecca Minkoff's Paris Phone Bag, to keep bags, passports and other essentials. I just love the winter mint colour, and the lock should deter normal pickpockets.

This Kate Spade's Cute Cosmetics Pouch just screams must-have to me.

Flight 001 Fill and Fly Carry on Quart Bag is a cool item to prevent you from the hassle of being stopped at Immigration. hehe. Thankfully I haven't been stopped for this, although I was stopped at Jakarta's immigration which led to me missing my flight! Okay, okay I'll blog about it soon!

Finally, loving this Laptop bag by Rebecca Minkoff! Yes, I don't think I can travel without my laptop.

Guys, the sale ends tomorrow. So don't miss it. Go check it out!

My weekend has been pretty awesome as I get to spend it with the husband, just us two. We have been really busy recently juggling our work. Both of us are juggling a few jobs at the same time and even if we are not working, we will be either attending events or fulfilling social obligations.

I'm not complaining though as nowadays, I have more time with him and we make sure that we have dinner together everyday unlike back then when we were both just too engrossed with work that we did not even have time to have dinner with each other. I guess that will be a story for another post.

However, back to the weekend, I must say I had a blast as we started off last Friday night watching Hunger Games again for the second time. Watched together with Mel from Nuffnang, my brother Hariz, and my cousins Mia Suraya and Luqman. On Saturday, we were feeling a little under the weather so we just rested at home, doing nothing and just had our much needed rest. Then at night we watched Rurouni Kenshin, since he is a big fan of that movie. We just watched the Part 1 of the finale 2 weeks ago.

Yesterday, on Sunday, we went to watch a play which I have actually just watched the week before. It is called Shear Madness. It was such a good and fun play that I didn't mind watching it twice. Or again. I plan to blog about it veryyy soon.

In the meanwhile, here I am sharing with you what I wore to the play with the husband, my brother Hariz and Azim. Right after the play, the husband and I went to have a rejuvenating and revitalising time at the hair saloon. I did something new with my hair and I just love the new me!!! Even though it is only for him, but I'm loving it! And he loves it too! Hehe.

Here's me wearing the LEANIRA in beige fully unbuttoned from aere (there's also a picture of me just buttoning one down the middle  for a flattering v shape which really deserves its own look post) together with a pair of super comfy pants and top from FV BASICS which will be available online TOMORROW.

There's no need for the Monday blues when you have had an awesome weekend and plenty of rest. That's a very rare combo, well for me at least. I'm ready to take on the week!

d-ELLE-lightful Surprises This Week

Hello Blessed Friday!

I just got back from a nice dinner at one of my favourite spots just near my house for  a quick retreat from what has been going on this week.

It has been a hectic and colourful week for me, but most of all, this week has been full of surprises! :D

First, I was called up for a live on-the-air interview with Wanita Hari Ini; then the next day I found out that aere and I were featured in the New Straits Times on the same day that I was interviewed on the live show; and then I was suddenly given the opportunity to travel to an exotic destination which I have never been to (I am going in about one week's time)!!!

I can't wait to share and blog about all this soon! It's the reason why I haven't managed to steal some time off to just sit down and blog this week.

But the surprises have yet to end for me this week. Today, while browsing the internet, I stumbled upon this article by ELLE magazine on aere!!! This article was actually published on ELLE MY on 28th October 2014 on the day of the release of aere but I just saw it today. I'm humbled. This week has really been a series of delightful, unexpected surprises for me. All praises to the One who determines everything. Alhamdulillah.

Right now, I just feel ready to embrace the weekend!

Happy weekend guys!

A piece of cloth on my head: My Hijab Journey 5

$

Hi everyone, I know it's been a while since I updated this series, but here I am. What I shared previously is not with the intention of exposing the sins that I have made or bragging about my past, far from it. It is with the hopeful intention that people reading this will realize that it is never too late to turn to God, you are never too far down the road to turn back. I am reminding myself first and foremost when I am blogging about this as I can be quiet forgetful too a lot of times.

So what happened when I started to wear the hijab?

There were a lot of setbacks but one day I felt that I needed to take that step and change my appearance. No one told me to. But I continued my journey as a hijab wearer. The first few years of me wearing it was not easy. It took me a few years to adjust and I know it may be hard to believe but it was a really slow progress for me and it still is a progress.

I did receive comments that I was being an extremist because people still saw me as someone who wore sleeveless tops and short skirts to suddenly wearing a tudung with really loose clothing when I just started. I couldn’t understand why some people said it was extreme. But looking back at it now I would probably understand their point of view better.

For the first few years it was hard for me to adjust and remain consistent and there were days when I wanted to give in and just take it off. In that sense I was lucky because I chose to go to a university where every Muslim girl had to cover their head with the scarf.

However the period after I decided to wear it permanently I must say was difficult. It was a great test. Sometimes it was all good but I did have challenges of opening the hijab. Two most difficult things? Going to a  beach trip. And going to the gym.

When I did these two things, initially I felt that I could not wear the tudung. Because it wasn’t natural to be wearing it. It wasn't compatible. The hijab felt like a burden, a chore in those circumstances. I know it's not right to say these things but that's what I felt. I'm sure I'm not the only one who did. The human heart is always tested. Always.

So I went to the beach about 3 times after I started wearing the hijab. I'm ashamed to admit that I actually wore whatever non-hijab wearers wore too when they go to the beach. Same goes when I went to the gym. I felt I couldn’t wear the hijab when I go to the gym. I remember I enjoyed it at that time. I felt free. I didn't know why. Maybe I did not submit fully at that time. Maybe I still haven't.

So ladies, even once you've made your decision to wear the hijab, don't think that it will be smooth-sailing. You will be tested. Externally: all the comments from around you, the judgmental views of those who deem you unworthy of following His path, and those who judge you as hypocritical for even trying, from those who wait just to see you fail and all the discreet persuasion from this dunya to give it up. Internally: all the insecurities and countless self-doubts, the struggles, the battles your heart fights and loses yesterday, even though its the same battles you won just the day before.

That is why our Prophet Muhammad (SAW) taught us this prayer:

"Ya Muqallib al-Qulub, Thabbit Qabi' ala Deenika"

"O Turner of Hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion"

and

"Ya Muqallib al-Qulub, Thabbit Qabi' ala Ta' atik"

"O Turner of Hearts, make my heart firm upon Your obedience"

We can only hope that when we reach the end of our journey, our hearts are set in His path, not on that one day when we temporarily give up and stop fighting. Na'uzubillah.

Where I am where I am today is a result of over 8 years of struggles. Bit by bit, crawl by crawl. It wasn't easy. It never is. I'll share more of it with you in the next post in this series. In the meantime, this is pictures of my style three years ago.

Hello dear readers :)

If you follow my IG you would have noticed that I did a #rnadiagiveaway right after my post The Big One : My search for a bag has ended

Here is the picture I posted together with its caption!

"1,2,3 or 4? Which bag did you think I finally got and WHY? I will treat the lucky person who gets the correct and best answer to dinner. No joke! Clue is in my blogpost "THE BIG ONE : MY SEARCH FOR A BAG HAS ENDED". #rnadiagiveaway"

It's not much, but I really wanted to get to know my readers more, a bit more personal and I thought it'd be nice to treat them and get to know them over a quiet dinner. I received 112 comments on the post guessing the answers and giving their reasons.

Reading all those comments really showed me how observant my readers are and their reasonings were not wrong. Eventhough there is only one right answer, I loved all the bags for different reasons and I am happy to read the comments. To be honest though, I actually REALLY wanted bag #4 the most but as mentioned in the clue post, they don't ship it outside US.

So, that was why I went for #1 the Alexander Wang Diego Bucket Bag with Antiqued Gold Hardware which isn't a bad runner up!

So now, out of all those comments, I had a real hard time choosing the winner. Yes, it took me so long just to cut the finalists down to 5 contenders who gave the best answers, and I really felt bad for those who didn't make it because I loved their answers too. In fact, I don't think I'll be able to choose just one winner, so I've decided to choose two. Haha. Yes, that's me.

So check out if you are one of the contenders for dinner. I've put up the five posts below. Don't worry, if you are not one of them, there will always be a next time. InsyaAllah.

Doing this giveaway has been quite fun and i love to get connected with my readers. I am really thankful for the overwhelming response.

I'll choose the winners soon, after I return from my overseas trip next week, Insyaallah. And I can't wait to treat the winner for dinner! :D (That rhymes.)

I got the bag from Shopbop just within 3 working days after ordering it. I am so happy with the service and the packaging. It really made my whole week!

Our Dream TV For Our House

After attending the Toshiba Convention (which I blogged about in Moving Into a Smart Future), my living room had a void that I didn’t realize before. The husband and I do actually watch some series on our computer when we both have some free time together. I really wanted that TV!

If you don’t know, I’m talking about the Toshiba’s L9450, the 84 inch Ultra HD 4K TV with Android which they launched at the convention.

So, it came as a big surprise to me when Toshiba chose me to review their TV! I was stunned. Though the unit that I reviewed was of the L5400 series LED TV with Android, I was as excited when I came home and the TV was in the living room.

We quickly and carefully unboxed the TV. And lo and behold, there it was. The Toshiba TV was big and beautiful. It was crisp.

It started up just like an android phone would. There was basically two modes: TV and android. The android menu was quite extensive. They had a browser mode, youtube, facebook, etc.

Wifi connection was seamless and there were no issues of the Wifi connection dropping at all. I logged on the TV using my gmail, and the information on my phone was basically transferred to the TV. It truly is a connected world with the Toshiba L5400 LED TV with Android.

Personally, I really loved watching the Youtube channel. I liked how the TV would automatically play the next video once you’re done with the first video. So in the mornings when I’m getting ready for work, I’ll just crank up a youtube video that gets the mood going.

This is the trailer to the Avengers 2 movie that we streamed from Youtube. The picture was so good it felt even better than in the cinemas
I also used the browser feature to stream the tv series that we both love to watch. My husband also used the TV to live stream his favourite team Tottenham Hotspur lose (I think they lost last weekend) in big, crisp, HD detail. Hehe. No, I don’t watch football.

Watching music videos on youtube

I actually came home and found him using the browser menu to read news articles, comics, and basically everything he would normally do on a computer on the TV. When I asked him why he didn’t just do it on his computer, he said he liked the super huge screen and the quality of the display.

The TV comes with two remote controls. There’s your normal and standard remote control, and it also comes with another smart remote control that has a mini-joystick thingy to be used as a scrolling feature and acts like your mouse to navigate the huge screen. It was an excellent idea and the navigation button was quite responsive. The smart remote control also has convenient home and back buttons. It’s just like any smart phone.

our remote control holder

The remote controls

The sounds were also very sharp and precise. Everything could be heard clearly and smoothly. They also have an audio filtering function that helps to filter out noise coming from the source.

I just loved using the TV and got used to having it. It was very user-friendly and definitely a must-have for entertainment. Previously, I thought that it wasn’t such a big deal not having a TV, but Toshiba’s L5400 LED TV with Android has managed to change my mind. I’m not sure if Toshiba has released the TV and the pricing yet, but I’m very curious to find out. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to afford it, but having a goal lets us have a focus to go out and achieve it!

Now that the review is over, our lives are just not quite the same anymore without the TV. So hang in there, hole in my living room, while I try to fill you up with Toshiba’s L5400 LED TV with Android.

Namastay dear readers!!

This year's travels has been largely unexpected. If you follow my Instagram you would probably have known that I was in India for the past 7 days through my #rnadiaindia hashtag.

A few days in India has been an eye opening experience for me, I learned so much in those 7 days. India is incredible: it is a place with so much character and it feels like I was in a different world. It changes my perspectives on a whole new level.

I've missed blogging! I didn't bring my laptop to India and the trip to India has been really hectic so I did not have time to blog over there. It wasn't easy for me to get a sim card and wifi too so I only managed to update what's happening in India on my IG through tethering with others who managed to get internet on their mobile phones.

Oh yeah, I did the roaming thing and forgot to take the package this time around and was charged a bomb. So that's tip #1 when you go to India: If you're roaming, subscribe to the daily internet package.

Anyway, I was invited to join a trip to India with other delegates for a buying mission. We went to Mumbai, Ahmadebad and Surat.  It wasn't planned months before or anything. I only got to know about one week before the trip. The week before that was just really hectic as I had to settle a lot of my pending work in Malaysia and also had to squeeze in-between applying for my Indian Visa and generally prepare for the trip.

Before I start on my Journey to India series, I will leave you with some photos of me travelling from Malaysia to India in my comfiest outfit ever, the EDITH Detachable Jumpsuit. Since I knew it was going to be a little cold during the flight which took almost 6 hours, I wore a maroon jacket just to keep me warm. It is pretty lightweight though.

Thank God I decided to do that because the flight itself was okay, but when I arrived, the weather in India was really quite cold as it was winter over there. Sometimes when I am just so used to Malaysia's summer/rain all year round weather I forgot that there are other parts all over the world that experiences the whole 4 seasons thingy.

I can't wait to share all of my experiences in India. But, then again, I haven't even shared my experiences travelling to China in the middle of this year!

I am really thankful for the opportunities to travel this year. I thank Allah for the rezeki and for granting me the health and energy to travel in 2014. Alhamdulillah.

A Fashionable Camera

I recently got the chance to try out the new Pentax Q-S1 camera. I’ll be upfront and deliver the verdict straightaway: It’s a little but very explosive dynamite: it packs a real punch! As a blogger who is just setting up my own fashion brand (aere), I’m always on the go and I just have to have my camera with me. Who knows when I’ll need it to snap some cool pictures when I need to.

The Q-S1 is a 12.4 megapixel camera which delivers high-quality and high-res images thanks to its 1/1.7-inch CMOS image sensor. If you’re the kind who love to keep printed photos, Q-S1’s high resolution allows the pictures to be printed up to A1 sized without sacrificing its quality. The Q-S1 runs on the “Q-Engine” which is truly a high speed engine that is state of the art. The Q-S1 can also be used to capture full HD movie clips as well.  The Q-S1’s lens are interchangeable and there’s already a whole line-up of lens available which you can check out more at Ricoh’s website.

All that in a very compact and small body which can fit into any handbag! That’s definitely a huge plus for me. It’s stylish and classy too. The design is a little retro, in the cool kind of way. I really liked the finishing on this camera. The quality and effort they put into the finishing shows that the Q-S1 is not just your typical throw-away camera. It’s built to last. The metal is high-grade aluminium - it looks and feels solid. It doesn’t feel flimsy at all. The Q-S1 also uses textured synthetic leather on its front panel too. This is also one of the plus points of the Q-S1: It mind-bogglingly comes in 40 different colours! I’ll get to this later.

Having used this little baby for a while, I really like the simple and user-friendly options.

A picture taken by the pool yesterday at my apartment.

There’s also an Auto Picture mode where the Q-S1 helps select the most appropriate optimized shooting mode scene for you. There are 21 scene modes for you to discover.

I also have to say that in my experience, a camera makes it or breaks it when you are snapping pictures under low-lighting. I’m happy to report that the Q-S1 produces superb images even in low-lighting. They have worked to minimize the noise in high ISO sensitivity levels so that images do not break under high ISO. In fact, this pic I took of the hubby looks like he’s photoshopped in there. The background is crystal clear and the pool looks like a sheet of ice.

Like I mentioned, the Q-S1 comes in 40 different colours and that’s a treat, especially if you’re an avid OOTD taker. Nowadays, cameras are such a necessity that it can also be considered as part of our accessories! Hehe, but it is true right? So it’s just really great to know that you’d be able to match your outfit with the PS-1. And this is where your individuality comes out.

The Q-S1 is very certainly a small camera yet it is big on features. It’s also just very pretty and stylish. Done right, it’s also the perfect accessory to your OOTD. I’d really recommend this camera if you’re looking for a small compact camera with DSLR-like capabilities. It pretty much has everything – including interchangeable lens. The camera will also bring out the individuality in you. Go check Pentax Malaysia out at their Facebook page here.

In the meantime, here’s a few OOTD pictures of me with different colours of the Q-S1 which I paired up with my outfit.

Abstract on the Wall

What is it about abstract art that just appeals to us? Is it the opportunity to interpret beauty and meaning by your own definition and perception? I don't know, but to me, I just can't get enough of it. And when I started aere, one of the things I was aiming to do (and will try and do more in the future, God-willing) is to incorporate more elements of art into fashion. Because fashion is indeed a branch of art.

So, when I decided to produce the ZERENE reversible top which consisted mainly of sequinned crop tops, I also chose to produce a slightly different version in the line-up: the ZERENE abstract print top. I fell in love with the design at first sight. It was abstract and incorporated the colour I had in mind for the first collection too. The print is manufactured in Japan and it is exclusively one of its kind. I also love the fact that it is unique to the customers: no two products will have the exact same designs (Read: A Burst of aere ). Alhamdulillah, it was really well received and I'm so thankful that the ZERENE print was almost sold out in just 2 days.

At the same time, I was already working on to produce the abstract print in the LEANIRA shirt dress. The shirt dress is a design that I genuinely love. It is sophisticated in its simplicity. If it's buttoned down entirely, it is sleek, professional, classy. Even as an outerwear, it is something casually chic that anyone can pull off. To me, the LEANIRA has more of a European-style feel to it. Read my posts to see different ways of styling the LEANIRA in my previous posts Scintillating Black Leanira and Back to Basics.

The LEANIRA abstract print is a combination of the two things that I love, and I have a feeling that this little gem will be well received again. InsyaAllah. I also can't gush enough about the quality of the fabric, you really have to feel it in your hands to feel and appreciate the luxurious yet lightweight fabric.

I don't think pictures do it justice, but I have tried! I wore a casual top (from aere's next collection) and some comfy pants from FV Basics under the LEANIRA abstract print as an outer. I chose a white wall this time around just to bring out the print.

I'm happy to announce that the LEANIRA abstract print will be released online tomorrow at Fashionvalet.com/aere. Less than 12 hours to go. :) Be sure to click on aere early tomorrow morning so that you won't miss out this time.

2014 has been a blessed year for me in terms of travelling. Apart from Krabi, Jakarta, Bandung and Singapore, I’ve travelled to places that aren’t really touristy – Humen and Shenzen in China and Surat, Ahmadebad and Mumbai in India for example. But these travels have given me a zest for discovering more places that are unknown. Of course, I would also like to travel to my dream countries if given a chance. Hehe.

Well, what are my dream countries? I’ve recently travelled to the Holy lands of Makkah and Madinah in 2012, and I last visited my birth place England in 2012 (for work), so that’s crossed off the list. But there are still quite a few on the list: Italy, Paris, Turkey, New York and Egypt!

So it’s really cool that RHB Bank is giving its customers a chance to choose their dream vacation for two worth RM 50,000.00 from the following destinations: Italy, New York, Dubai, Germany or Paris! That’s three out of four on my list too. RHB is really wanting me to enter this, right?

Through RHB Now Internet and its new phone app “RHB Now Mobile Banking App”, RHB is making online banking convenient to all its customers on your desktop or on your smartphone, on the go or at home. And just by doing that, we might get to win a free trip for two? That’s really awesome.

Okay, so you’re wondering how you can win that dream vacay, right?

It’s simple. All you have to do is register for the contest and perform simple online transactions with RHB Now Internet and Mobile Banking. For more details, check out  http://www.rhb.com.my/Whats_New/rhbnow/travel-around-the-world-with-rhbnow/how.asp#.VJEeWcmKvhA

Oh, there’s also 5x Monthly prizes of iPhone 6 and 10x weekly prizes of Petronas Gift Cards if you’ve been there and done all that. But can anyone really get tired of travelling? I don’t think I will. So sign-up guys. Travelling is an experience for yourself, and its worth sharing too!

First Facial in Years

$

0

I actually can’t remember the last time I did a facial. It has been years. And I’ve only done it twice in my whole life before this. Honestly, I didn’t really realize the need for a facial and didn’t know about its benefits. I thought it was just one of those fads. The last time I went though, I had a bad experience during the extraction. It was so painful that I promised myself to never ever go through it again.

Recently, I’ve been noticing that there are red dots popping up on my face and I now have a lot of blackheads and whiteheads on my nose. It’s really pretty annoying.

It made me think that the reason why my face is breaking out is because I used to wear so much make up back then. Nowadays, on days that I don’t go for a shoot or event I usually will keep my face bare with no makeup so that my skin can breathe once in awhile.

But I could no longer avoid what everyone was asking me to do: do a facial!

So I went to Dr Nano Labcel Beauty Centre for a facial. Twice already. They have a few branches but I went to the one at Tropicana City Mall. It started with a one on one skin consultation with a personal skin expert. She was very polite and patiently explained everything to me and made me feel comfortable before the treatments.

She interviewed me about my skin so she can know what kind of skin I have. I told her that I am quite sensitive to a lot of products. However, I use a lot of makeup and cosmetic products. You know, I always thought I had a round face, but she told me that my face type wasn’t actually round, but rectangular. Well, when in doubt, trust the expert! Hehe.

On a more serious note, she was very surprised that I haven’t been doing facial for a few years and I only did for 2 times before and I told her it was because of the traumatic extraction incident. She explained to me that even though extraction is painful, it is necessary as it opens up clogged pores. She also explained that because of the clogged pores, some of my facial care products could not work effectively, as it could not penetrate inside my skin to work effectively.

She then did a professional skin analysis where she tested and analyzed all parts of my face and also did a skin moisture test! Honestly, it was kind of scary to look at my skin in close up! Crazy! My zoomed-in whitehead looked like a pimple. I don’t want to look at it again! But, it pushed me to do the treatments.

However, after the computerized analysis they were then able to suggest solutions on how to make my skin healthier and better. So each and every treatment would cater to the individual’s needs and problems, not just the same treatment for everyone. It also depends on the type of skin you have.

So I underwent my customized treatment. Unfortunately, I couldn’t avoid the extraction! It was so painful. But after seeing the size of my whiteheads and blackheads, I decided that it was necessary. No pain no gain right? *Cries* But the rest of the treatment was painless, soothing and very relaxing.

After the treatment I could see and feel that there was an immediate improvement. My pores were closed, my skin felt a lot firmer and my husband said he noticed that my face had a little more glow. Of course, because of the extraction, my face was red for two days. But it’s gone now, and I’m happy to see such visible improvements.

After years of resisting facials, going to Dr Nano made me realize that not only is it a necessity, it’s also the first facial I went to that I could see immediate results. I was also given a cute door gift!

So guys, if you’re new and want to try facials, I would recommend going here. Even if you’re a seasoned expert, you might learn something new about your skin. They are also experts of v-shape face procedures. I didn’t try it then (because I have a soft spot for my round face) but maybe I will give the v-shape face procedure a go next time. If you want to check them out, they have a special facial promotion going on.

Just click on the link above and you might also get your cute door gift from them too!

Aging is a very natural process, and eventually your face will start to sag and have reduced elasticity and firmness. But it’s also important to note that nowadays, your face ages not just because of natural reasons, but also unnatural ones. For example, from all the smoke from cigarettes and vehicles, from all the chemicals in our food, from unnatural conditions and from not having enough exercise or sleep. Therefore, it’s very important to do our best to slow down unnatural aging and to take care of your health and appearance.

I have a few more treatments to go and will be sharing with you guys how it goes. That’s all from me for now!

Time Travelling and Reflection: 2012-2014

$

Hi everyone :) This is my first proper post of the year.

While I was writing this, I found an old and very long unpublished post titled "Highlights of 2012 and 2013" in my draft folder. I wrote it towards the end of 2013 or early 2014 (I can't remember) to reflect on what has happened over the past two years. I wrote so much but for some reason, I did not publish it. And now, it is already 2015. So, I decided that I can't do the same thing again! Discovering that old post pushed me to write and finish this!

But reading back on the unpublished highlights of 2012 and 2013 post has just made me realise how so much has changed. I've moved on to other new things and doing new things which I never would have imagined before.

In summary though, 2012 started out with me just being made a partner of a law firm at the age of 27. It was a nice reward for an extremely demanding 2011 in terms of work as a cross-border financing lawyer which brought me to travel to London, Jakarta and Singapore. For 5-6 months in 2011, I barely had anytime for my husband and family and hardly ever saw them. Yep, crazy. So in January 2012, the whole family went to Yogya for a much needed family trip. I also bought my own house and went to my first umrah trip  in June 2012 where I made new friends with the Usrah Fitrah group. And then I got pregnant almost immediately after I returned from umrah.

In 2013, I became a motherto an angel and things just weren't the same anymore. I slowed down my practice as a lawyer after almost 6 months of medical and maternity leave. I focused more on blogging and accepted jobs promoting fashion brands which also helped to bring more recognition to this blog and opened up a lot of opportunities and friendship. I also went for vacations in Redang with the husband and Jakarta together with my dear Ruzana. It was in 2013 that I slowly got involved in the fashion industry when I set up a fashion company. That was my first exposure which I really loved, but in the end it didn't work out. I was also featured in a few magazines: Nona, Hijabista, Wanita, Jelita and Aquila. Oh, my short story was published in a book called Travelscapes too.

Quite a lot happened, right?

Well, we haven't even reached 2014 yet.

I realise that it took me quite a while to write a proper post this year. Truth be told, I wanted to do my reflection or highlights of the previous year post since the end of 2012, but it has been difficult. But, when I look back at my unpublished post I realise that there are so many blessings and gifts this past few years. My perspective on life has really changed after I went for umrah that June 2012. Of course it not all roses and rainbows as I had to go through storms, heartbreaks and the rain just like other people. But, the beautiful thing is that there are a lot of things that make me laugh and smile and keeps me going throughout the years too.

We cannot run away from hardships as it is the thing that will make us grow and be mature. So, other than being thankful for the blessings and gifts we have been blessed with, we should also learn to be thankful for the hardships and the heartbreaks which will teach us the important lessons in continuing our journey in this temporary world we live in. At the end of the day, when a hardship occurs it is not the end of the world. Even if it is, this world is not the end. Our goal is to attain happiness in the eternal life after death. May we constantly be reminded of this.

Now then, back to 2014... It's pretty surreal that I couldn't see at all in 2012, where I would end up today. I believe I am in a much better place than that time before I went for umrah in 2012. That umrah trip was a turning point for me. It took all sort of unexpected twists and turns to get here today. So trust in God's plans. Enjoy the journey and allow yourself to be constantly surprised.

The major things that happened in 2014 was me travelling, switching careers, starting up my own fashion label, taking blogging more seriously and finally moving in to the house that the husband and I bought together in 2012.  We finally made it a point to spend more time together. After 6 years of practicing law and prioritising work above everything else including family and my own health. I finished watching all 6 seasons of a series with the husband. It's the first time ever! I also started to do yoga and eat cucumber too! (Something I hated before)

I will gradually share my 2014 stories that I haven't shared in the blog but I am going to divide into categories because otherwise it is going to be a super long post if I don't do that.

Oh and maybe I should finally post the unpublished 2012 and 2013 highlights too even though the circumstances have changed because all the twist and turns of life has led me to where I am today. I must warn you though, it is a pretty looonggg post.

Since this is my first heart to heart post of 2015, I would just want to express my gratitude to YOU and all my dear readers for reading and taking the time to visit my blog. I can't believe it has already been almost 6 years since I started to write on this blog. I really didn't think that it will be such an important part of me today. Thank you so much for reading and for the support throughout my ups and down this past few years. Nothing beats the feeling of knowing that you clicked "read more" on my recent blogposts or getting notifications of a new comment. Hehe. I love you guys :) Thank YOU. From the bottom of my heart.

PEACE & LOVE!
