A Start to Better Financial Habits

With the rise in prices of pretty much everything and the increase of the US Dollar rate, everyone is feeling the effects. In these trying times, and the unstable world economy, every little bit helps right? For all of us, it would be prudent to promote proper financial habits, which ought to be done not just during the hard times, but during better times too.

Do you keep your own finances in order? Do you keep track of the things you spend on? Well I used to do it, using the good ol' fashioned way :- pen and paper. I know that might be funny, but that’s how I used to do it. I normally keep a small sized book with me that I carried with me everywhere I went that I use to record all of my expenditure. Hey, it worked for me.  It really did.

When I started working, I made sure that my expenditure tabs were written down. It was easy because it quickly became a habit. I was able to see what I was spending too much on and things that I didn’t spend enough on. I can’t exactly remember why, but somehow somewhere along the line, I stopped writing my expenditure down.

That’s why when I was introduced to the TouchStyle app, I was instantly amazed. Touchstyle is a new app by Bank Rakyat. As far as financial management goes, it’s pretty much what I would need in terms of tracking earnings, monthly commitments. You can key in your spending and it encourages you to also set saving goals. I can now put away my pen and paper to record my monthly expenditure.

What’s more, it is Shariah compliant for the discerning. This app has plenty of features, for instance you can now monitor your daily spending with “Daily Spending”. This is the feature I like the most because that way I can track my daily expenditure, monthly commitments and see where I spend most of my money on. There is also the “Goals” feature, where it helps you to calculate the monthly savings that you need to keep in order for you to go on that dream vacation you’ve always wanted (I have a few in mind), or buy a car or bag that you really want.  This app can help you make it come true.

Well, I’ve downloaded it and found it really easy to use. You can download this must have app yourself at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lightgearlab.touch&hl=enand try it out. The key to having proper financial habits starts with just one small step for everyone and for me this might be a good start to a better and more tech-savvy way to organize my finances without bringing anything more than my phone with me!

Do check it out guys and let me know how the app works out for you!

Search For Healing : Rediscovering 5

It was Sunday 13th December 2015, exactly a month after the day that I posted "Reflections : We all belong to our Beloved Creator". My husband and I went to Bangi to visit my in-laws and have family lunch together. Right after lunch we spotted a bookstore there and we went in looking for certain books.

I previously blogged about me searching for books in "Search for Healing : Rediscovering 4".

We got a few books, but the husband found this book in particular for me and we bought it. A belated birthday gift for me. I loved reading this book and the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad really is a great source of comfort for whatever it is we're going though.

Check out the book. It's concise and simple and if you know anyone who has a child in heaven or has a family member or friend who has lost a child, you probably can get it for them too. Took some snapshots of the pages below to share with you all.

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) lost 3 of his children when they were infants and the way he dealt with the losses are truly inspiring. Blessings to our Prophet Muhammad and his family.

May God increase our love towards Prophet Muhammad and increase our knowledge about his beautiful life and character. With that may our desire to please Our Creator increases too. May we all reunite in heaven.

Salam Maulidur Rasul.

It's been a wonderful long weekend for me. Mainly just resting and meeting up with family and friends. I feel rejuvenated and refreshed! I went for a quiet date with the husband eating and chitchatting at one of our new fav spots (right after he took these photos). :D

At the same time I was also busy preparing for aere's second release tomorrow! Here in this post I'm wearing two of aere's new designs from the Essence of Grace collection as previewed at KLFW 2015 which will be released online and offline in less than 12 hours time! More designs are coming up so do check it out tomorrow morning :)

I wore aere's ILIARIA Flared Pleated Skirt and ORA Reversible Full Metallic Top with dUCkscarves and also a watch I won as a gift for a Best Dressed contest as mentioned in my post I See Red.

Wow, only a few days left before we end 2015! Have a productive and wonderful last week of 2015, whether you're on a holiday or working :) Till my next post!

Today beautiful Vivy and I were coincidentally matching. I had a good and productive serious meeting with her in the afternoon but when I saw her before the meeting today I instantly thought "she looks so great we just have to take a photo after the meeting!!!" Hehe. So biased, also because she's wearing aere:D

But out of all days, I didn't bring my camera today. Seriously! So, Iman helped capture this fun moments with Vivy's phone.

Vivy's wearing the newly released aere's DEA Reversible Cropped Metallic Top and I'm wearing aere's VITA Double Breasted Multi-Way Top and aere's CERUS Pants.

This post reminds me of the time when both of us wore dUCkscarves in May 2014 last year in my post The Red Duck. Times sure flies since I posted a photo with Vivy in my post KLFW 2013 and this year  when we were featured together as blogged in my post In The Cosmos , Surprise Fashion Feature in November last year, In the News : Life and Times July this year and more recently in the video in Essence of Grace at KLFW 2015.

Good memorable times. :)  Vivy has been a strong aere supporter and lover. As I get to know her personally these few years she's a good friend who is thoughtful, kind, sensitive and also very funny too. Not to mention she shared so many of her experiences in the fashion business too when I started aere last year. Alhamdulillah for bringing us together  :) May God reward her abundantly for her kindness and sincere efforts. Amin

Ending 2015 on a High

2015 has been amazing career wise, after my official career leap and totally focusing on running my fashion label aere and blogging. I learned so much this year and I know there's so much more to learn and experience which gets me all geared up and excited for 2016. This year has been lovely with all the good surprises and overwhelming support and response for aere and my blog from you my readers, stockists, partners, media and the press as well as of course, my family and friends. Thank you so much for the bottom of my heart as I feel so blessed for 2015 as I reflect just before 2015 ends.

Nadia Badarudin (New Straits Times journalist / writer) informed me this morning via whatsapp that my interview with NST is out today so I went out and searched for 2 copies to give it a thorough read and quickly snapped these photos featuring aere's latest designs as props! I still feel awkward and weird seeing myself in the papers. It's overwhelming really. Alhamdulillah syukur for the good write up of the interview she did with me last month. Surprised to see it today just 2 days before new year :)

I talked and shared about my career leap or the switch of career from law to fashion and everything else related to it. Look for a copy to find out what the interview is all about. :)

Thank you for saying it as it is Nadia! Lovely writeup. Loved NST's last write up too which I blogged in my post In the News : Life and Times.

Truly humbled by all the overwhelming love, support and features this year. All praises to the One who blesses us with rezeki, gifts and guidance.

Reminsicing...

Last year in October 2014 I was featured in the Sun as blogged in my post The Sun is Shining on Me Today when I have really just started to crawl and started aere.  It was actually a day before the launch of aere's first collection. And now just 2 days before 2016, this feature by NST.

I'm really ending 2015, on a high. :) Switching from law to fashion is one of the best lfe-changing decisions I've made, even though I love and am passionate about both industries. Thank you God for determining my path in this way and thank YOU who's reading this for the love and support. Alhamdulillah.

How's 2016 so far? Mine has been amazing Alhamdulillah. :) Still on a high. I went for  a getaway with the husband for our special day (10th anni) and we spent it relaxing and connecting with nature. we took so many photos too as usual and I'll be sharing it in the blog soon. For now, I'll share with you some photos from one of the days we spent doing some activity at a private island. We took a half day boat ride exploring caves, rivers, the sea and an island. Here, we had to climb up the stairs and go down to go to a place with an amazing view which I'll share in my next post.

Candid shot he captured when I was already tired after climbing up the stairs.

I wore a comfortable outfit as I know that we had to move around a lot. I'm wearing aere's RAYNA Flared Pleated Sleeve TopMimpikita Flare Cullotes in Emerald Green and Peanut Butter dUCkscarves.

First Week at Work in 2016

First day of work in 2016 yesterday was filled with meetings with aere's growing design and production team and also manufacturers and suppliers from morning till night time. When you run your own fashion label you don't really have any break from work as you think about it and work all the time and I love that about running aere as it's something that I enjoy doing, I'm truly passionate about and love so much, so most of the time I forget that I'm actually working. (I have the husband to remind me about that :p)

Eventhough there are a lot of challenging and nervewrecking times, most of the time I feel that it is extremely satisfying that my hobby turned into my career. With more responsibilities, more things to learn and goals of course. I love my job. All praises to the One who determines our path, Alhamdulillah. It's something that I would never have imagined when I started working as a lawyer and I'm truly humbled and grateful for the productive year in 2015 running aere and blogging more seriously.

I'm starting 2016 with this thoughts and I'm hoping that I will continue feeling this throughout the year even though stressful days ahead! Hehe. May it be even more productive this 2016! InsyaAllah.

I wore this smart casual look yesterday for my meetings. I'm wearing a short dress which I just turned into a top and I like the minimalist v shaped sheer net panelling at the sides which gives a flattering slimming effect when worn.  at the sideA Short Flared Dress in Cappucino from 50450 , aere CERUS Pants and Sugarscarf

Flying with the Wind

I started 2016 with travelling. 2015 has given me many beautiful memories. Good and bad. I'm trying my best to learn from all the amazing experiences, unexpected twist and turns, wonderful surprises, the ease and hardships, and now I'm going to just go through what life brings me in 2016. Flying where the wind brings me.

Khubayb captured these photos very quickly when the plane we were on reached the airport while we were walking from the airplane towards the exit. It was really extremely windy at the runway and my scarf and sleeves were flying all over. I had fun snap chatting the moments. (By the way I started to snapchat a lot for the first time that day and finally understood what the hype amongst my friends were all about)

All praises to God another year has passed, I'm alive and still breathing and excited to go through 2016 and insyaAllah I'll still be able to blog and continue updating the blog, if God wills it. May the Most Loving and Most Merciful determine what's best for all of us this year.

I wanted a top which has sleeves which looks like wings so I made this LELIA Tulip Sleeve Top through aere. Some say it reminds them of butterflies, some say firefly and some, like an angel :) So what do you think the top looks like? I paired it with this amazing structured skirt from Mimpikita , Sofina 3 bag and Yadotsa galaxy print scarf.

It was a special night personally for the husband and I so I chose to dress up a little bit more that night. It was our 10th. Alhamdulillah. :)

I blogged in Flying with the Wind when I mentioned we travelled somewhere on the first day of 2016. If you added my snapchat (rnadiasabrina) you would have known where we went haha. So much of trying to keep it a secret :p

Since, I'm wearing a tutu skirt in blue, I decided to tone down the look by wearing a black  embellished top and scarf with nude heels and my clouds clutch.

The Ones Who Keep Me Up

I wanted to actually publish this post when I was just about to rush off for a meeting on a Saturday with the suppliers for aere’s upcoming collection for 2016. But the meeting got dragged till late. The past week has been crazy busy with meetings from day to night.

Starting the year with a hectic schedule but I am thankful. Just a quick reflection, another thing I am thankful for in 2015 is that despite all ups and downs, I have a bunch people who never fail to pick me up and be by my side during the good times and the bad, through life’s joys and challenges until the hurdle is passed.

Photo of me and my girls at Eima's
Loves : my sisters - Sarah Rusli, Ruzana Ibrahim, Fahima Salleh, Hasanah Hilmi and Shereen Bahawi.

I realize that there are people who might want to see you fall, but there are those quality few who brings you up when you’re down. Alhamdulillah.

My family has always been my safe harbour that I can forever lean on; and of course, the love of my life – Khubayb has never left me alone and held my hand every single time when we were struck with challenges in life. These people, I’ll forever be grateful for.

Then there are my closest friends; though we no longer get to  spend a lot of time together nowadays, I am thankful that they’ve always cared for me and that I know I can depend on them even whenever, wherever.. I’ve mentioned about them in this post What Sisters Are For 1, and I hope our friendship will continue to flourish in the years to come.

Though I foresee 2016 to be another year filled with more work with the plans that I have with my fashion label aere; I am determined to stay connected with my loved ones – all of them. If you would like to do the same, why not start with sending some word of encouragement to them at the beginning of the year? Kotex’s Pass the Protection (link here) is still running so why not start with this? Ladies, trust me. This simple gesture might not look much, but it will mean the world to your loved ones and at the very least, show to them that you are thinking of them.

Okay, gotta rush. Pass The Protection and happy 2016 guys =)

Titans of Time

They say that one of the keys to success is to control time. Of course, time isn’t something you can control except for your own.

There are so many things that you can do to control your time. For me, I always try to plan my week ahead, I have a to-do list, I set reminders on my phone and laptop to prompt me. Of course, there are just so many things you can do in a day, but it’s always good to get into the habit.

Keeping time is always better when you have a reliable watch with you too.

With Bobo Stephanie and Suraya Sulatin

Late lunch! The food was awesome!

Sat with Bobo and Sixthseal, Huai Bin Poh

I was honoured to be invited to the launch of Titan’s newest collection: the Raga Moonlight collection. Titan is one of the leading companies in the world of watches - with them being the 5thlargest watchmaker in the world and is making its presence felt in Malaysia with Chronosoft Sdn Bhd. And boy do they mean business!

My door gift!

Each guest was given a Titan watch as a door gift, which was a really unexpected but very pleasant surprise. I got a ruby dial titan watch with beautiful Swarovski crystal hour markers in stainless steel bracelet that was really beautiful. The dial even had two hearts in it, which was a sweet touch. But this wasn’t the only surprise I got that day. Anyways, at the event I mingled with the guests and some other bloggers including Bobo Stephanie and had the pleasure of meeting the sweet and kind Suraya Sulatin for the first time.

With fellow blogger Sabby Prue

The event was officiated by Mr. Vijesh Rajan. The Business Head of the International Division. The collection presented had really beautiful watches. The one that caught my eye were beautiful watches adorned with Swarovski crystals and pearls. According to Mr. Vijesh, the collection represents the interpretation of beautiful objects that are touched by moonlight. Priced between RM 375 to RM 1985, the Titan collection is available at major watch stores in Malaysia.

At the end of the event, they announced that they had a best-dressed contest for the guests. I was looking at my bag and was really surprised when they announced that I had won the best-dressed award. The launch was held in conjunction with Christmas and had a merry red theme. I actually just casually put on my red aere zerene sequinned jacket over a plain black top and paired it with aere’s skirt (See my post I SEE RED), but had no idea there was a best-dressed award. I was a bit speechless when they asked me to go up and receive the prize.

I received another Titan watch, which was a really exquisite piece that had a mother of pearl dial and embellished with Swarovski crystal and a white leather strap. This was the beautiful watch I said I won which I also wore in my ORA & ILARIA post. I must say that Titan really knows how to design beautiful watches designed for women that looks good as accessories as well as tell time. The men’s watches were nice too. I saw some of the watches the guys received as their door gifts and the watches are something I know my husband would like.

So, at the event I received two brand new and very beautiful watches. It was such a small blessing and I am very thankful to receive these two really unexpected surprises and add to my small collection of watches. So do keep a look out for this brand. I’m sure there’s a watch that you’ll enjoy.

It's been awhile since I blogged. I've been pretty busy with work and aere and right this moment I'm actually on a comfortable couch (which is also where I've been since last Saturday and has been my sleeping spot for the past few days) as the husband has been admitted at the hospital and I'm here accompanying and trying my best to take care of him. I have been worried sick about him but Alhamdulillah I know that God has determined what's best and he's recovering insyaAllah. May God cure the love of my life soon. Amin.

Right now as I'm blogging this and he's lying down on his hospital bed, I'm reminiscing the good times we had on the first day of 2016 earlier this month when he captured this photos after we hung out by the beach. It really was a gorgeous and special day as it was also our anniversary. Will share more on the things we did that day soon.

The photos is this post were taken hours before we went for That Special Dinner on the First and after Flying with the Wind.

It was also the first day I started snapchatting away and started to get hooked. Now, I think I snapchat way more than I instagram anything. (Not sure it's just a phase or something that will last for a long time though but I'm actually love to express at Snapchat. Today, I also shared the process of me bloggin this post on snapchat (ID : rnadiasabrina)

Anyways, I wore a neutral look that afternoon.

Paired aere's DEA Cropped Metallic Top, aere s ILIARIA Flared Pleated Skirt and Sugarscarf paired with a vintage bag I got from mom's closet. And I love the effect when the wind /sea breeze blows.

Appreciating Health in Adelia

Salam and hello dear readers :) Hope you had a wonderful weekend and am wishing you a productive week ahead!

I wore this last week just a few days after the husband came out of the hospital and having him discharged and recovering well was the highlight of my week. :) Nothing beats being worried about your loved one, taking care of them and in the end being able to bring them out of the hospital. It's a natural sense of happiness and contentment.  I appreciate that because I have experienced times when the opposite happened. Sometimes, we take out health or loved ones around us for granted, but when we are tested with the loss of health we realise that God has blessed us with health during the times that we were not experiencing any sickness. I had a good weekend with the husband as he's recovering pretty well.

Events like this reminds me to always fight and take care of our health a little more. Eat more healthily, exercise more. All praises to the One who blesses us with good health when we are healthy.

Wearing a combination of two of my many many favourite things. :)  Sequins and pleats. I just had to produce these two items for aere as both items are simply pretty and easily matched with any of my pieces in the wardrobe.

A black sequinned top is easy to be mixed and matched with anything. It will intantly bring glimmers to an outfit for a night our or even a day out! Who says sequins are just for night time? :)

I'm wearing aere's ADELIA Cropped Sequinned Top (released today), aere's ESTELLA Full Pleated Skirt, dUCkscarves, Cluse watches and Quay Australia sunnies.

Hello everyone,

Haven't blogged for a while so I just thought I'd quickly update this. I had a great night out with my girl cousins on my dad's side last night. We haven't had a proper outing just us girls for a while outside of family events so we arranged to have dinner and initially wanted to watch a movie together (although there was a slight change of plans).

My cousin Min was the only one who couldn't make it, but we met up anyway and had a nice dinner where we caught up with what was happening with our lives. We ended up having an unplanned sleepover at my cousin Cho's place. That was fun!

Anyway, since it was our first outing for a long time, the girls just wanted to have a little fun and wanted to dress-up a bit for dinner, so I wore aere's LACERTA Pocket Cropped Top in White paired with Shea Rasol's navy Hi-Low Taffeta Maxi Skirt. White tops are always a must have, especially non-sheer ones and I just love the quirky huge pockets on the LACERTA top and the front zippers. The reason that I designed this cropped top is because I just love cropped tops! It pairs great with the high-waisted skirts that I have.

Oh, the skirt designed by my good blogger friend Shea Rasol is really awesome to wear. I love the fact that the front of the skirt is designed slightly shorter than the back which is  great to show off your heels. To me it was a fresh look that was not too dressy, but not too casual either.

Hope you're enjoying your long holidays. Happy Chinese New Year everyone!

I'm grateful that I had a lovely long weekend spent with my family and in-laws. Hope you had a fulfilling one too! Wore this all blue look last Monday, and no I didn't have any Monday blues.

Khubayb captured this shots after we had a delicious family lunch at my parents' house. My mom cooked so many dishes, Alhamdulillah! After the heavy lunch, we went to Bangsar to look for some coconut ice-cream and drink in the sunny hot weather and we checked out aere's physical stockists.

I'm wearing aere's VERA Suede Pleated Skirt paired with a denim shirt for a casual look. See how I styled the same skirt for an event in my post SILVER LINING CLOUD. Have a great productive week ahead dear readers! :)

Wore this on 6th December 2015, when I went to my cousin's baby shower at BSC. It was for Yeop Khairain and Kak Wawa and they had a silver, white and purple theme.

Being someone who likes to follow themes, I naturally obliged! I wore aere's ORA Reversible Full Metallic Top in Silver, CERUS Pants in White and PariPari Shawl in Purple by my sister Hashanah Hilmi. She made the shawl for me a long time ago for my brother's wedding. I kind of enjoy dressing up for themes to appreciate those who take the time to come up with themes and decorate parties according to them. Well, most of the time anyway hehe.

Anyways, Alhamdulillah, Kak Wawa has since delivered a beautiful baby girl, Khalisah last month. I share Yeop Khairain and Kak Wawa's happiness as we welcome another lil pumpkin niece into the family!

A quick post of what I wore today to send of my father and mother in law to the airport earlier today for a very long work trip. I think I'll write more on this later, I'm still quite emotional from the farewell.

Anyways, I took the day off and decided for a more casual and comfortable look. I wasn't really thinking about taking an ootd today, but as I was leaving KLIA, I noticed that the sun was shining beautifully with its sunbeams and the lighting was juuuust right, and I decided, okay, it's just calling out to me to just take a few shots just before we left KLIA.  And those few shots turned out really well (in my opinion, anyway).

I decided to pair Shea Rasol's Dusty Coral Pleated Tunic Top with aere's Levant khaki pants. Wore it together with a matching scarf from Sookascarf.

Really like the flare of the tunic top and of course, the pin-tucked feature of the pants just adds that little extra detail that not only makes the Levant pants stand out from most of my other pants, it also gives an illusion of a slimmer and longer legs which helps boost my confidence on days I decided to wear flats. At least, that's how I feel when I wear it! (Ignore the fact, that I tip-toed in most of the shots taken today) :p

Where It All Started - First Campaign Shoot

$

It's almost 2 a.m. in the morning and I am still up. I haven't been able to sleep early lately. So, I was just browsing through my hard disk and found the behind-the-scenes photos of aere's first campaign shoot for the first ever collection launched on 28th October 2014, and decided to start blogging on this BTS / reflection post.

The Nature of Grace collection.

It's always good to pause and reflect at where we currently are in our individual journeys, and also to look back to where we started. Of course, aere has a long, long, long way to go. It's been over a year since aere just started, but looking at these photos reminded me of how much aere has grown since it started. And it reminded me of aere s first campaign photo shoot. It feels just like yesterday.

I was just so extremely nervous the days leading to this photoshoot. It was my first ever shoot for aere, and my first official step into this new world, having left my lawyering days behind to pursue this. And this photoshoot was going to be how I would introduce myself, my brand, my new pursuit to the whole world. Man, the pressure was really intense. I didn't want aere to be crushed at its first attempt. I had no idea how aere was going to be received by everyone. It was hard to remove these doubts and thoughts from my head, even though I was sure that I made the right decision to switch careers after already thinking about it for a long time.

Somehow, you have to push away the voices of doubt that get in your head. Despite these doubts, I knew and had figured out the mood, concept and look that I wanted specifically for this photoshoot but of course whether it turned out as I envisioned it was another matter.

As aere means air in Latin, I wanted the concept of the shoot to be in the air and I also wanted a nature in the city kind of concept. And I felt that since I was introducing aere to the public with the first collection, I wanted it to symbolise the colour of the logo too. White and blue, which represents the white and blue we see in nature. The sky, the sea, clouds... Easy right?

Not really. Where were we going to find the location to shoot that concept? That was one of the many things I had to figure out.

As it turns out, a few weeks before the shoot I attended a private family event at my cousin's Zaralisa's apartment. She did it on the rooftop and the view was just amazing as they even had a pool with a beach feel on top of the roof. They had a sand pit too. I felt that the apartment's rooftop was perfect for my concept, and there was a background of all blue with NO greens. Just the model wearing aere  with the sky as the background with hints of the blue pool and buildings down below. I really wanted and was pretty set on the all-blue and white background concept.

But alas, we can only plan ahead and plan for something that we want, but He is the best of Planners and His plans are always better for us... The plan I had in mind for aere s first photoshoot was taken over by an unforeseen sequence of events.. Looking back more than a year on, I'm very thankful that I could view whatever that happened now as something positive. And I'm going to share about my day that day.

It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining but it wasn't too hot. Thank God it didn't rain. Everyone arrived on location early and we were pumped up for the first shoot! I thought things were going smoothly. The shooting for the first look went well, we managed to shoot at the place by the pool where I wanted the shoot to be at for the whole 6 looks. It was a pretty cool manufactured beach on a rooftop overlooking a clear blue sky.

I didnt even know what was tear sheets before this photoshoot. But I had it prepared few days before the shoot as a guide.

So we did the shots for the first look which is ZEPHYR Draped Dress at that spot... And then suddenly we had to unwillingly move to another place because ...

Let me rewind back to the time I was planning for the shoot before I continue telling the rest of the story about the shoot.

What made the nervousness increase was that the time was really tight. There was already a delay in production for the 6 designs I wanted to release together as I've targeted the first release to be a certain date, but I had to proceed with production of the designs much later than my targeted date because the samples did not turn out as I wanted it to be. Of course, the samples had to be remade a number of times till it was perfect for production and it took me months till I was finally happy to proceed with production. I was hard on myself as I had set a certain date, of course other people didnt really care as I did not tell other people my timeline but it was something that I have already set my mind into so I was really bummed when it didn't go as planned. At the same time, I didn't want to rush something which wasn't the finished product. I wanted to make sure all of the aere pieces were solid quality.

When we finally got the shipment samples which was perfect according to what I wanted, I could't wait any longer and pushed myself to plan for the first ever shoot.

First, the photographer. I needed someone who's good, creative and has a great track record. A few of my cousins recommended Bibo Aswan and I called him at the very last minute. I was glad that he agreed to do it and he said for him to shoot 6 looks it will only take him half a day. I thought shoots could last the whole day, but this guy is a pro. Plus, it was only 6 looks. (Though at that time it did feel like 6 looks was really a lot production wise and in general since I was  just merely dipping my toes in the fashion business) I chose beautiful Lauri Dalanhese, a Brazillian Model through Andrews Models and booked Mabel Toh for makeup. The bubbly Nadhirah Brundage helped with the logistics of the shoot.

There were 6 designs altogether. For the styling of aere's first designs I knew how I envisioned and want the models to wear them but I had help with the styling from Alyssa  Aishah Shahrir and Gina Anryana who were then interns at FV. They helped with finding the accessories and bags and even printed out photos of the mix and match. I brought Ina who was also my talented assistant designer for aere at the time. She also helped me to dress the model up and help see if there was any problem with the fitting and outfit. The great team that day was pretty awesome and as much as it was pretty stressful, it was also a fun shoot, at the end of the day. I was blessed to get the assistance of these amazing individuals!

There were problems though.

For the ISSORIA Draped Skirt, the final sample didn't reach  us on time for the shoot, so we had to use one of the previous samples that I had already made changes. That's why the shoot's sample and the final one that's released is different! Hehe. But at that time, I was so annoyed because we couldn't shoot the full look of the skirt because of that. As for the EDITH Detachable Jumpsuit, the standard sizing was more towards Asian size. It's actually perfect for my kind of height, but as the caucasian model is really really tall (she made us look like midgets during the group photo), it was difficult for us to attach the top and bottom of the detachable jumpsuit, so there were times when we just had to detach them for her during the shoot to let her breathe. The wardrobe malfunction was a major panic emergency situation at that time!

Oh, and not to mention, as it was an outdoor shoot, there wasn't any changing rooms, so Lauri had to change with some of us covering her up!

Back to the story of the venue. Oh yes, the venue was really gorgeous and all. It really suited the concept that I envisioned in my head. Nature in the city. Modern and minimalist. Sometihing that to me, represents aere. But there was a problem. My cousin was a resident there and we did not have problems taking photos there at the rooftop with DSLR and all for the event she hosted just weeks before the shoot which made me decide on the venue. We made the necessary payment to book the spot. However, the guards and management didn't allow us to do our shoot by the pool since the shoot we did was for a commercial purpose. I didn't know this beforehand.

So thats why, after we shot the first look, we kena halau and had to shoot at another place, just above the pool. It wasn't that bad, there was still a nice skyline view. But the only problem is is that there were a lot of greenery and trees too.

In my mind, I was screaming "no!! The concept is ruined! There will be greens in the photo. I just wanted a blue and white background in the photo! No greens!" Bibo and the rest of the team knew that but I didn't want to cancel the entire photo shoot to look for another place. Bibo also assured me that he could still work with what we have and synchronise the theme with the first Zephyr look. I trusted his eye and judgment, then learned to let go and just accepted the fact that there will be greens in the photo. The end result? It turned out to be great~! Greater than how I expected it to be. Greens are good for you, don't you know?

Even when we have moved to the different spot, the guards weren't too happy we did the shoot there so we had to rush it. Lucky for me, Bibo Aswan was just so talented and creative that she managed to get pretty gorgeous and amazing shots so quickly. We were done with the shoot by noon.

So, some lessons I learned from my first campaign shoot for aere :

1. Finding a beautiful and perfect location (in this case it was the Verve Suites) is important, but having the proper permission to do the shoot is even more important.

2. Having the samples ready is one thing, but fitting of the pieces on the model is even more important because photoshop is still so limited to certain things.

3. Learn to adjust to the situation and let go. I wanted no greens, but at the end of the day, I had to accept the fact that I have to let go of what I want, because in turn I might get something even better.

4. Always take a group photo at the end of the photoshoot, because you never know one day, you might not have the chance to work with all the same group of talented people again. So it's nice to capture the beautiful memories for the shoot.

5. As much as it can be challenging and nerve-wrecking (I must have been frowning the whole time under the hot sun because I was so worried how it might all turn out), at the end of the day, just have fun with it because it will show!

6. It is okay to overthink. It is much better than not thinking at all about something that you are responsible for. So don't beat yourself too much when you stress out and overthink things that you are in charge of.

I remember when I took the BTS photos oh-so-nervously during the shoot and thought to myself that if aere is well received and is still standing maybe a year from the first collection, I'll blog and share the story about what happened behind the scenes of those gorgeous shots which made the first release a success.

And here I am, around 1 year and 6 months after that shoot (4th September 2014), almost 2 years since I started aere, typing this out and just feeling very thankful of the success of that first collection. Some of the designs were sold out in 2 days, and some in just a few weeks. We restocked some of them due to popular demand.

Oh, and I remember since it was my first shoot and I couldn't even sleep the night before, Khubayb the husband came to drop by from his busy schedule at work to give love and moral support. It was just about 15 minutes but it means the world to me to know that I have the support of my own husband especially when it was during the time that I officially changed my career from being a lawyer to running and managing my own label. Plus, he brought us pizzas and took this candid-not-candid group photos at the end.

Whats not to love!

So have faith that even though things will not turn out how you want it to be, it'll be okay in the end. If God wills it.

It was one of those Saturday nights I spent with my family for dinner together. But, we were all there to celebrate my brother Nadhil's birthday on 20th February 2016, a day after his birthday. So, we went for a quick yet fulfilling dinner and then watched the movie "Hail, Caesar" together.

I wore aere's PLATINA Zipper Jacket from aere's Strength of Grace collection and aere's ESTELLA Full Pleated Skirt from aere's Essence of Grace collection, both in grey. The PLATINA was designed to be worn for work, but that night I wore it casually by tucking it in, into my ESTELLA Skirt. One of my fav features on the PLATINA is the texture of the fabric, the invisible pockets at the side as well as the adjustable sleeves with zippers. You know sometimes we want to roll up our sleeves, but sometimes it doesn't look tidy? The zipper at the cuffs ensures that when you roll it up it will look neat, clean and tidy. What I love most about the ESTELLA is the fact that it's so versatile and can be worn with anything, plus it's so easy to iron as the pleats are accordion electric pleats! :D

A Pop of Pink

These past few weeks have been filled with so many meetings with aere's team and manufacturers for aere's future collections for this year. There's just so many exciting projects for the year. I'm super nervous and anxious, yet extremely excited for what's to come, God-willing. I love that I get to learn so many new things every single day. May God make it smooth, easy, enjoyable and may it be another beautiful year for aere.

Here's something simple and comfy that I wore yesterday to go to work and meetings. Wore all neutral pieces with a pop of colour. When I want to look a bit more professional, I tend to go for this type of look. Neutral coloured tops and similar toned bottoms and then just put on a coloured scarf. Nothing flashy, but not too dull either. Pretty easy, innit?
